About this Story

Eighty-six years out from Earth, the generation ship Kaleva carries twelve thousand sleepers toward a star they will never see in their own lifetimes. Pilot Anneli Vask is woken three months early, alone on her deck, because the shipmind has registered a wake tone it cannot explain. Someone who is not on the rotation is awake. Three decks are sealed under a captain's override, though no captain has been roused in forty years. Chief Engineer Mihkel Pärn believes it is sabotage. The shipmind Reval believes it is forgetting things it should remember. In the long quiet between stars, the crew must decide what kind of trouble they are actually in — and which of those answers they can survive.
