The Sorting After

The Sorting Hat had been thinking. This was not, in itself, unusual — the Hat had been thinking for roughly a thousand years, mostly about the relative merits of courage, cunning, loyalty, and intellect, and whether any of these qualities could be meaningfully assessed in an eleven-year-old. What was unusual was that, for the first time in its long existence, the Hat had arrived at a conclusion it found genuinely troubling: it had been doing its job wrong.

The realization had come gradually, the way most important realizations do, built from a millennium of accumulated data. Students sorted for their bravery often needed to learn caution. Students sorted for their ambition frequently lacked the collaborative instincts that would make that ambition sustainable. The Hat had been reading children like books and shelving them by genre, when what they actually needed was to be placed in the section they would never have chosen for themselves.

When the first student of the new term sat on the stool — a nervous, meticulously organized girl who had read the entire first-year syllabus in advance and whose mind practically vibrated with scholarly energy — the Hat settled onto her head, reviewed her thoughts with the thoroughness of long practice, and said, for the first time in its history, something it actually meant: a house name that surprised everyone, including the girl. The GreatHall erupted. The girl burst into tears. The headmistress raised an eyebrow. And the Hat, for the first time in a thousand years, felt something remarkably close to satisfaction.
