Narration on OutaStory is opt-in. Publishing a story does not
narrate it. Nothing is spoken until you, the author, ask for a
narration and choose the voice it should use.
Before you start
- The story must be published. Narration cannot be created on a
draft — the option simply isn't there. Publish first, narrate
after. - The story must fit the cap. A story can be narrated up to
200,000 characters in total. Beyond that, narration isn't
available for it. - Decide on one voice. You pick a single voice and it is used
for the whole story, every chapter.
Two ways to start it
From the publish wizard. The wizard runs in three steps —
1 Details → 2 Cover → 3 Audio. Step 3, Audio, is where you
choose a voice for the story you are publishing.
From My Stories. Open /my-stories, go to the
Published tab, find the story and use "Add audio". This is
the route for anything that is already live, including stories you
published long before you decided to narrate them.
Choosing the voice
You listen to the voices, you choose one, and that choice applies to
the entire story. Readers cannot substitute a voice of their own —
they can only pick between the versions you created. There is

How long it takes
Generation runs chapter by chapter and takes several minutes per
chapter. A story with many chapters therefore takes a while. You
don't have to sit and watch it — leave the page and come back
later; the chapters become playable as they finish.
What it costs
- The first narration of a story is free.
- Every extra narration version costs 50 credits from your
balance.
So narrating a story once costs you nothing. Making a second
version — a different voice, or a fresh take after an edit — draws
on your credits. You can see your balance and what credits are for

The "Allow personal narrations" toggle
Each published row in /my-stories also carries an
"Allow personal narrations" toggle. It is set per story, so you
can allow it for one story and leave it off for another. It is
yours to change at any time.
