Lessons from Failure

The company died on a Tuesday. Not with a dramatic collapse or a boardroom confrontation, but with a quiet email from our last investor that said, in the polite language of people who are done with you, that they would not be participating in the next round. I read it sitting in the office we could no longer afford, at the desk I had bought secondhand from a bankruptcy sale — which, in retrospect, should have felt more like an omen than it did. The irony was not lost on me. It was just too heavy to carry at the time.

I want to tell you that I handled it with grace. That I gathered my team, delivered an inspiring speech about the lessons we had learned, and walked out into the sunlight with my head high and my resume updated. The truth is that I sat in my car in the parking garage for forty-five minutes and stared at the steering wheel. The truth is that I had put everything into this — not just money, though I had put in plenty of that too, but time and identity and the particular kind of hope that comes from believing you are building something that matters. When that is gone, you are not just unemployed. You are unmade.

This book is not a success story dressed up as a failure story. I am not going to tell you that everything happens for a reason, or that my failures made me stronger, or that the universe has a plan. What I am going to tell you is what actually happened —the mistakes I made, the warnings I ignored, the moments I chose pride over pragmatism — because I believe the most useful thing a person who has failed can offer is not inspiration but information.
