The-Balance-Keeper

The city of Avena had no coins, and Noor had spent her whole life learning to read what people gave instead.

She worked in the Glass Commons, a long hall whose walls were panes of recycled glass, so that anyone passing could watch the keeping of the balance. There were no locks in Avena. There was only the slow, public arithmetic of need and gift: the baker who left loaves on the cold-shelf, the engineer who patched a stranger's roof before the rains, the grandmother who sat with the dying so the night nurses could sleep. None of it was paid. All of it was seen. You do not need money where nothing is hidden — her teacher had told her that on her first morning, and Noor had believed it the way you believe in weather.

For three years she had tended the open ledgers, the great public books where Avena recorded its kindnesses the way older cities once recorded debts. People came to read them like the news: who had given, who had needed, how the wheel turned. It was a beautiful arithmetic, and Noor had never once found it wanting.

Then, on a grey morning in the month of rain, she found the other book.

It was behind the cabinet of forgiven harms, in a recess she had dusted a hundred times without ever noticing the seam in the panelling. A single ledger, bound in plain cloth, unmarked but for two words pressed into the cover: Quiet Accounts. When she opened it, the pages were full— not of kindnesses, but of names. Hundreds of them. Beside each name stood a figure she did not understand: not a sum owed, but, the column was headed, a sum carried.

At the very front, in her teacher's own slanted hand, was a single line. She would go on hearing it for a long time.

The balance is never even. Someone always loves more than their share. This is the book of the ones who choose to.
