Tomorrow Yesterday

Dr. Nessa Byrne did not believe in time travel on the morning of March 14th, which made it particularly inconvenient when she accomplished it by accident at 2:47 in the afternoon. She had been calibrating the university's new quantum resonance chamber — a device designed for materials testing, not temporal displacement — when she dropped her coffee and, in lunging for it, knocked a sealed envelope off her desk and into the active chamber. The envelope contained a letter she had been meaning to mail to her landlord. The chamber hummed, the lights flickered, and the envelope ceased to exist.

Twenty minutes later, she received a phone call from her mother. "Nessa, love, the strangest thing — I found a letter from you in the kitchen this morning. It's dated five years ago, but it is definitely your handwriting. It is addressed to a Mr. Hargreaves. Is that your landlord? You did not have a landlord five years ago." Nessa sat down very slowly. She did not have an explanation. She had a hypothesis, and the hypothesis was catastrophic.

By evening, the first paradox had already begun to propagate. Her published paper from 2023 now contained a footnote she had not written — a footnote that referenced the resonance chamber, which had not existed in 2023. Her colleague Dr. Farrow remembered a conversation they had never had. And in the bathroom mirror, just for a moment, Nessa saw herreflection flicker, as though she were a television signal struggling to maintain coherence.
