About this Story

In Mara's country, every citizen volunteers for two years of state service when they turn sixteen. Mara's older brother went last year. He came back changed. Mara is fifteen and a half, and she is finding out that volunteering is not, exactly, voluntary — and that there are people quietly working to change that.
