About this Story
Twelve years after a girl was smuggled from the Tideflag in a cask of oranges, a woman steps off a merchantman into the harbour that bore her name. Reyna Halleth carries nothing but a forged manifest and a letter her father wrote the night he knew he would die. Her half-brother has worn the regent's chain for those twelve years and intends to wear it twelve more. Her claim is no army, no treasury, only a brittle oath a salt-bitten sea-warden swore at a font of sea water when Reyna was still a child. The kingdom sits athwart the only navigable strait between two oceans; whoever rules it rules the weather of empires. In the narrow streets above the inner harbour, her name is already being whispered in the wrong rooms. The tide will not wait.
