Greta Alvarez is fourteen, a ninth grader at a mid-sized public high school in a Texas suburb, and she has just realized something the adults were hoping no one would: student government isn't actually a joke. It has legal authority over a discretionary budget and the student handbook, and nobody in the building has bothered to read the bylaws in years. She runs on a platform of unflattering specificity — the handbook is wrong about phones, wrong about lunch, and wrong about the kind of student it pretends to want — and she wins by forty votes. Then she does the thing no one expected. She starts using the office. With her running mate Simone Park at her side, a tired counsellor named Mr. Hawes in her corner, and a vice-principal who did not sign up for this, Greta learns the rules nobody wrote down, the price of a friend who switches sides, and what a school board hearing feels like when your mother is sitting three rows back. A funny, sharp-edged debut about fourteen-year-olds with actual power.
