About this Story

London, 1894. Sherlock Holmes has not long returned from the grave, and already an unseen correspondent is writing to him. The letters arrive without postmark, in a hand Dr. Watson has never seen, and each one foretells a crime he is able to prevent. They are signed, impossibly, with a single letter M. Holmes, for the first time in all the years of their acquaintance, is in the position of receiving help rather than giving it — and he is, by turns, affronted, fascinated, and at last something stranger still. Watson records the affair as it unfolds, while his friend withholds what he knows, and the trail leads at last to a quiet address in Chelsea, a woman the Yard never thought to question, and the old Professor's shadow falling forward into a world that believed itself rid of him.
