The-Room-That-Listened

For nine days the smartest people on Earth had pointed every microphone they owned at the thing on the salt flat, and for nine days the thing had said nothing they could record.

Iris Calloway knew this because she could read it on their faces, and faces were the only language she had ever trusted. She had been deaf since before she had words for it, and she had learned long ago that a room full of frustrated experts looks exactly the same in every country: jaws tight, shoulders forward, everyone leaning toward a silence as if leaning would fill it.

They had brought her in as an afterthought. Tactile consultant, the badge said, which was the committee's careful way of admitting they had run out of ideas. The visitors' craft was a smooth grey ovoid the size of a barn, and beside it stood the three of them — if stood was the word for shapes that seemed to hang in the heat-shimmer like held breath. They had no mouths. They had no eyes anyone could find. Every instrument trained on them returned a flat, mocking line.

Dr. Renner pressed a tablet into her hands. We've tried everything, he typed, his thumbs jittering. Radio. Light pulses. Prime numbers. Nothing answers.

Iris did not answer either. She had stopped, three steps from the craft, because the soles of her feet had gone strange.

It was not sound. She knew sound the way she knew the colour of music other people described— secondhand, as rumour. This was something else. The salt beneath her was trembling in a pattern that was not random, the way a struck table is not random, the way a hand laid flat on a speaker is not random. A slow pulse, then three quick, then a long press of stillness that was somehow not empty.

She crouched and laid both palms against the crusted ground.

The pattern repeated. Then it changed — and the change was answering the way she had moved, the way a careful person waits, then mirrors you back to show they have understood. Above her the scientists watched their dead instruments and saw nothing at all.

Iris looked up at the eyeless shapes in the shimmering air, and for the first time in her life she was the only person in the room who could hear.
