The Glass Slipper Conspiracy

The glass slipper was kept in a climate-controlled vault beneath the Royal Museum, and Princess Margaux had been staring at it through the display case for twenty minutes when she noticed the crack. Not in the slipper — the slipper was perfect, as it had always been, catching the light and throwing tiny rainbows against the velvet lining. The crack was in the story.

She had come to the museum to research her grandmother's biography, a ceremonial task assigned to every third-generation royal. The official archives were immaculate, every document cross-referenced and annotated. Too immaculate. Real history was messy, full of contradictions and crossed-out lines. These records read like a novel — which, Margaux was beginning to suspect, was precisely what they were.

The first discrepancy was small: a receipt for twelve glass slippers, ordered six months before the famous ball, from a glassworks that the fairy godmother supposedly had no connection to. The second was larger: a letter from the fairy godmother herself, written in a hand that matched the royal spymaster's known correspondence with unsettling precision. By the time Margaux found the third — a map of the ballroom with sight lines drawn in red ink, like a military operation — she understood that her grandmother's love story was, in fact, a heist.
