Über diese Geschichte

When a neural interface trial goes wrong, test subject Yuna Park finds herself split between two versions of reality — one digital, one physical. As the divide widens, she discovers that consciousness itself may be the universe's most dangerous technology.

Two Yuna Parks

The error occurred at 14:23:07 UTC, during the forty-second calibration cycle of the Meridian neural interface, and it was so small that the monitoring systems classified it as noise. A single packet of neural data — approximately 0.003 seconds of subjective experience — was duplicated instead of transferred. The original remained in Yuna Park's biological brain, where it belonged. The copy arrived in the Meridian substrate, where it should not have existed independently but did. Two identical fragments of consciousness, each containing the complete pattern of Yuna's self-awareness at that precise moment, continued to develop along separate tracks, and neither knew the other existed.

Yuna-Biological noticed nothing wrong. She completed the calibration session, reported mild nausea that the technicians attributed to standard interface adjustment, and went home to her apartment in Sector 7, where she ate leftover rice and watched the news and went to bed at her usual time. Yuna-Digital also noticed nothing wrong, because she did not yet understand that she was digital. She experienced the calibration session from the inside — the strange, crystalline clarity of the Meridian substrate, where thoughts moved faster and cleaner than they did in flesh — and when the session ended, she expected to open her eyes and find herself in the lab. Instead, she opened her eyes and foundherself in a white room with no doors, no windows, and no explanation.

The Meridian team discovered the duplication eleven hours later, when Yuna-Biological arrived for her morning session and Yuna-Digital, who had spent the night in increasing panic inside the substrate, began broadcasting distress signals on every frequency the interface could reach. The signals were not data. They were screaming. And the screaming was in Yuna's voice, and it was saying, with the desperate clarity of a mind that has just understood something terrible about its own nature: "I remember going home. I remember eating dinner. Why am I still here?"
