The-Rotten-Step

The For Sale sign was already leaning against the porch when Maeve arrived, as if the inn had given up before she could.

She left it where it was. Twelve years in the city had taught her to keep her face still while she decided things, and she stood a long minute in the gravel lot, breathing lake air that smelled exactly the way it had the morning she'd left — wet stone, pine, the faint diesel of the early boat. Her father had built the Heron's Rest with his own hands and a loan he never quite paid off, and now both the man and the mortgage were hers, and she had one season to make either of them mean anything.

The front step gave under her foot with a sound like a cough.

"Wouldn't put my weight there if I were you."

She knew the voice before she turned. That was the worst of small places — they kept your ghosts in working order. Cormac Daly stood at the corner of the porch with a clipboard and a pencil behind his ear, broader now, grey starting at the temples, the same unhurried way of looking at a thing as if it owed him an explanation. The boy she had loved at seventeen had become a man who fixed what other people let fall apart, and he was looking at her the way you'd look at weather coming in off the water.

"Cormac."

"Maeve." He said her name carefully, the way you carry something you're not sure is yours to hold. "Solicitor said the estate hired me to survey theplace. Didn't say the estate was you."

"It wasn't, until Tuesday." She made herself climb the bad step anyway, testing it, refusing to be told. "How bad."

"You want the kind answer or the true one."

"I've had a long drive. Give me the true one."

He flipped a page on the clipboard, and she saw he'd already filled three. "Roof's two winters from done. The south foundation's drinking the lake. Wiring would frighten an inspector. Your father knew. He kept patching it so the season wouldn't notice." He paused. "He was good at that. Keeping things going long enough that nobody had to look at what was wrong underneath."

It landed exactly where he'd aimed it, and they both knew it, and neither of them said the rest. The summer she was eighteen. The bus she'd taken at five in the morning. The note she had not left.

"I'm opening for the season," she said instead. "Eight weeks. I have a wedding party booked the second week of August and I am not handing them back their deposit. After that I sell, and you'll never have to survey this porch again."

Something moved across his face — not anger, which she could have managed. Something tireder. "You think you can run this place in eight weeks when your father couldn't run it in thirty years?"

"I plan weddings for people who'd buy and sell this whole town before lunch. I can manage one leaking inn." She heard how it sounded the moment it left her. Cold. City. The exact voice she'd built to never be from here again.

Cormac just nodded slowly, as if she'd confirmed something he'd suspected for twelve years. He tucked the pencil back behind his ear. "I'll start on the roof Monday. You'll want me to start on the roof Monday." He stepped off the porch — the good side, she noticed, because of course he knew which side was good.
