About this Story

When restoration architect Giulia Rinaldi is commissioned to save the Faro di Monteriggi from automation, she expects a clean professional job: survey the keeper's quarters, cost the masonry, deliver a report to the ministry, and be home in Genoa by December. She does not expect Sara Bonnet, the last keeper's daughter, who still lives at the light and refuses to leave the memory of her father to a plaque. Over one long Ligurian autumn — in kitchens that smell of anchovy and sage, on stairwells worn smooth by a century of footsteps, through a November storm that tests every stone of the tower — two careful women begin to notice each other. A slow, grown-up romance about the work of preservation, and the quiet violence of being asked to choose which life to keep.
