Reading offline in the apps

How to download a story for the train, what a download contains, and where the limits are.

Updated Aug 19, 2026

Offline reading lives in the OutaStory apps. It is not offered on the
web, because a browser has nowhere to keep a whole story.

Making one story available offline

There is no global switch and no "download everything" button. You do it
per story: open the story's page and tap "Make available offline".

If your account is not Premium, the same button reads "Make available
offline (Premium)"
— offline downloads are one of the things a Premium
account unlocks. See what Premium
includes
.

Two different things: the quiet cache and real downloads

OutaStory keeps a small number of the stories you open around
automatically, so they are still readable if your signal drops. That
quiet cache is capped at one story on the free tier and 20
stories
on Premium, and older entries make way for newer ones.

A story you download on purpose is different: it is pinned. Pinned
downloads sit outside that cap, so a Premium library can hold far
more than 20 stories. Nothing quietly drops a pinned story to make room
for something else.

What a download contains

A Premium download includes the story text and, when the narration is
ready, the chapter audio files as well — so you can listen with no
connection at all.

A story that has no narration downloads as text only, and that is a
success, not an error. On /profile/downloads it is simply listed as
"Text only".

Managing what you have downloaded

Open /profile/downloads. The entry appears for Premium accounts in
the apps; on the web the page has nothing to show, because the web never
downloads anything.

The page lists how much storage your downloads use, and for each story
either " chapters · " or "Text only". Each row has a
"Remove" action if you want the space back.

When you are not on Wi-Fi

There is no Wi-Fi-only setting to turn on. Instead, if you start a
download while you are off Wi-Fi, OutaStory asks first:

Download over cellular? You're not on Wi-Fi. Downloading now may
use your mobile data.

Confirm and it downloads; cancel and nothing is used.

Going offline for a while

Your downloaded library keeps working for 30 days after the last time
the app was able to confirm your Premium status online. Starting a
new download always needs a live online check, so grab what you want
before a long trip.

Two limits worth knowing

  • You cannot seek inside a chapter while offline. Offline playback
moves chapter by chapter; jumping to a point in the middle of one
    needs a connection.
  • Downloads do not sync across devices. Each phone or tablet
downloads its own copies. This is one of the deliberate exceptions
    described in what syncs across
    devices
    .

Clearing downloads

Signing out of the app clears the stories downloaded on that device.
Otherwise your downloads stay until you remove them yourself.
