OutaStory speaks English and German. You pick one, and it
follows your account everywhere you sign in.
Switching
Open /settings/language — reachable from your
profile — and choose:
- 🇺🇸 English
- 🇩🇪 German / Deutsch
The change takes effect straight away. There is nothing to save and
nothing to restart.
The surprise: it also changes what you are shown
This is the part worth knowing, because it looks like stories have gone
missing.
There is no separate setting for which languages you want to read
in. Your interface language is used as your reading language too. Switch
the interface to German and the home page, the category pages and search
start showing you German stories; switch back and the English
catalogue returns.
Nothing has been deleted and nothing has been hidden from you
permanently — you are simply looking at a different shelf.
Reading in the other language anyway
Two ways round it, without changing your interface:
- The all-stories page at
/storieshas a language row:
Your language, English, German. Pick one and browse. - Category pages show German readers a separate Stories in
English row, so you can dip into it without leaving the page.
What the language setting does not change
- Your stories, drafts, favourites and reading positions. They are
yours regardless of the language you read in. - The language a story is written in. Switching the interface does
not translate anything; stories are shown in the language their
author wrote them in. - Emails from us follow the same setting, so newsletters and
notification emails arrive in the language you have chosen.
Help articles and legal pages
This help centre exists in both languages, and so do the legal pages. If
you land on an English article while set to German, the German version
is the same article — following any link from a German page keeps you in
German.
If it does not seem to change
- Reload the page, or fully close and reopen the app. The apps
cache pages to open quickly. - Check you are signed in. Signed out, the choice lives only in
that browser and does not travel. - Still wrong? Tell us at
/help/contactwhich
setting you chose and which language you are seeing.
