Der sechzehnjährige David Balfour verlässt 1751 sein Heimatdorf, weil ihm ein testamentarischer Brief seines Vaters eine Verbindung zum alten Herrenhaus der Shaws eröffnet. Mit dem Pfarrer als Wegbegleiter macht er sich auf, Herkunft und Erbe zu klären.
