They found Khalil on the Galata Bridge at dawn, seated on a bench facing the water as though he had simply stopped to watch the ferries cross the Golden Horn. The positioning was deliberate — Khalil had always favoured public places for their implicit promise of witnesses — but there had been no witnesses, or none who would speak. The cause of death was a cardiac event, according to the preliminary report, which was technically accurate in the way that saying someone drowned is accurate when you do not mention who held them under.
