A Serious Problem

Sir Brielle was a knight. A real, full, knighted knight. She had been knighted last month. She had a sword to prove it. She had had a sword, anyway. Now her sword was missing. The dragon had been scheduled for dawn. Dragons were always scheduled. There was a chart on the castle wall. The dragon today was a small one — about the size of a goat — but reportedly very determined. Sir Brielle was determined too. She just needed her sword. "Ho!" she called to the squire. "Have you seen my sword?" "No, Sir Brielle. Was it not on the rack?" "It was on the rack last night. It is not on the rack now." "Could you fight without it?" "It is very hard to fight a determined small dragon without a sword." The squire thought about this. "What about the spare sword?" "There is no spare sword. The blacksmith is making one. It will be ready Tuesday." It was Saturday. Sir Brielle sat down on the steps. She thought about it. A knight does not panic. A knight thinks.
