The Embassy

The embassy had been under siege for fourteen hours when Sofia Vega arrived, which was twelve hours longer than any standard hostage scenario should have lasted. The police cordon was set at three hundred metres — too far for effective observation, too close for comfort — and the tactical team was deployed but stationary, which meant someone with authority had told them to wait. Sofia did not like waiting. Waiting in a hostage situation meant either negotiation was working, which no one had told her, or someone was managing the timeline for reasons that had nothing to do with saving lives. She set up her station in the command vehicle and reviewed the files. The embassy belonged to a minor European nation whose primary diplomatic function was, as far as Sofia could determine, hosting cocktail parties. The ambassador, Henrik Lindqvist, was a career diplomat with no known enemies and no obvious value as a hostage. The siege had begun at 4 AM when six armed individuals had entered the building through a service entrance that should have been alarmed but was not. They had made no demands. They had released no hostages. They had not communicated with the police at all. They had simply occupied the building and gone quiet. Sofia had negotiated forty-seven hostage situations in her career. She had a taxonomy for them — political, criminal, psychological, domestic — and this one fit
