Forty-Two-Degrees

The canopy over Carrer de les Glòries was dying, and the girl hammering on Ferran's door at six in the morning seemed to think he could stop it. "You designed it," Yuki said, before he'd even got the chain off. She was sixteen, sunburnt, holding a tablet that showed a graph the colour of a bruise. "Your name's on the plaque. The whole block panel's overheating and nobody at the co-op knows how to talk to the old controller and it's going to be forty-two degrees today, so. You designed it. Come fix it." Ferran had not thought about the canopy in nine years, not since he'd retired and handed it to the neighbourhood and told himself his part was done. He stepped out onto the street and looked up at the thing he'd half-forgotten he'd made. It spread above three blocks like a slow green weather system — a lattice of photovoltaic vine and trained fig, woven through a frame of recycled scaffold, its leaves angled by a thousand little actuators that turned with the sun.
