The door opened on the third day, not because they found a mechanism but because, as best Elen could determine, whatever was behind it decided it was ready to receive visitors. The metal surface split along a seam that had not been visible before, and the two halves swung inward on silent hinges, releasing a rush of warm air that smelled of ozone and old paper and something else — something floral and complex that Elen associated, absurdly, with the perfume department of a very expensive shop.
