The witness died on a Thursday, in a house that was supposed to be invisible. Safe house Fourteen was a two-storey colonial in a residential neighbourhood in Bucaramanga, indistinguishable from its neighbours except for the reinforced door frames and the panic room behind the master bedroom closet. Daniela Mora had placed the witness there herself, using the standard protocol — randomized selection from the available inventory, need-to-know access, encrypted communication channels, the works. The witness, a former cartel accountant named Perez, had been in the house for eleven days. He had followed the rules. He had not contacted anyone. He had not left the property. He had done everything right, and now he was dead, shot once through the kitchen window by a round that the forensics team said was fired from the roof of the apartment building across the street — a building that offered a clean line of sight to exactly one window in the house.
