A Method For Remembering

That evening, Lukas's mama helped him make a small cardboard sign. The sign was for the inside of his cubby in the cloakroom. It said: *BACKPACK CHECK. Did you bring it back? Sandwich? Pencil case? Books? Coat?* His mama also helped him make a small habit. Whenever he left a room — art, maths, the gym, the library — he would do a "look-around" before leaving. He would look at his desk, the floor by his desk, and the chair he'd been sitting on. "Most things you lose," said his mama, "you don't notice you've left them. The look-around catches them before they go missing." The next morning, they picked up the backpack from the art room. The sandwich, of course, was no good now (mama threw it out when they got home), but the maths book was fine and the pencil case was fine. Mr Halpern had even put a small note on the bag: *Hello Lukas. Glad you remembered. — Mr H.* Lukas pinned the note inside his cubby, next to the cardboard sign. For the rest of the year, Lukas only forgot his backpack twice. (Down from "many times.") The look-around mostly worked. When he forgot the second time, he remembered to think back through his day, the way he had with his mama. He found it on his own. That, his mama said, was even better than not losing things in the first place.
