Chapter One

The apartment was smaller than the kitchen of his childhood home, which Elias Nordberg tried not to think about as he set down the single suitcase that contained everything he now owned. The radiator clanked like a percussion instrument with opinions. The window overlooked an alley where a cat was methodically destroying a cardboard box. The wallpaper was a shade of yellow that could only be described as aggressively optimistic, and someone had taped a note to the refrigerator that read: "Welcome! Building meeting every Thursday. Bring food or excuses. Both accepted." He had arrived in Copenhagen three days ago with a culinary degree, four hundred euros, and the particular weightlessness of a person who has been cut loose from everything they thought was permanent. His father's last words to him had been delivered through a closed bedroom door: a sentence so precisely constructed to cause maximum damage that Elias suspected it had been rehearsed.
